EN: Tommaso Francesco Bórri will teach passages from the first book of Cicero’s “Tusculanae disputationes”. We will continue reading what we read in the previous courses (fall 2025 and winter 2026); however, all are welcome. The course will be taught in Latin, but more difficult matters may be explained in the vernacular languages (English, Italian, French, or Spanish) if the students wish.

Although Latin originated in Europe, it was used almost everywhere. Even in both of the Americas (North and South) it was used by Jesuits and their students, among others, but texts about these lands, more recently known to Europeans, are rarely read in class. For this reason, Lucia has decided to read some of these works. We will discuss passages about the United States, Mexico, and Brasil, among other countries, which were written from the time of Christopher Columbus to our own age.

Together we will read Cicero’s entire oration Pro Archia Poeta and complete some exercises on syntax and style in the classes themselves. This speech, from which we can learn not only eloquence, but also wisdom, praises poetry, poets, and humanitas itself.
