In this course, Lee, who herself is accustomed to memorizing poems and other material using the Art of Memory (also called Memory Palaces in English, for example on the television series Sherlock), will read with the students passages from Latin books not only relating to the Art of Memory but also to memory more generally in antiquity and more recent times. We will discuss works by the author of the ad Herennium, Cicero, Augustine, among others.

EN: Tommaso Francesco Bórri will teach passages from second book of Cicero’s “Tusculanae disputationes”. We will continue reading what we read in the previous courses (fall 2025, winter 2026, and spring 2026); however, all are welcome. We will read Ciceros’s oration on behalf of the poet Archias and complete some exercises, which pertain to grammar and style, in the classes themselves. This oration is in praise of poetry, poets, and humanitas itself. Whence we will be able to learn not only eloquence, but also wisdom.

This autumn, Tommasso Borri, who is among the authors of the book Athenaze, will teach the first chapters of this book to beginners.
